My interview with Kristen Simmons, talking about her new upcoming book The Glass Arrow!

Published November 20, 2014 by mrsjennyreads

Kristen Simmons is the author of the Article 5 trilogy. I had the privilege of meeting her in Frankfort, Ky. at the annual book fair. She has a new book called The Glass Arrow set to come out on February 10th, 2015, which I am very hyped up about. Here is the description, as taken from Goodreads.com:

The Handmaid’s Tale meets Blood Red Road in Glass Arrow, the story of Aya, who lives with a small group of women on the run from the men who hunt them, men who want to auction off breeding rights to the highest bidder.

In a world where females are scarce and are hunted, then bought and sold at market for their breeding rights, 15-year old Aya has learned how to hide. With a ragtag bunch of other women and girls, she has successfully avoided capture and eked out a nomadic but free existence in the mountains. But when Aya’s luck runs out and she’s caught by a group of businessmen on a hunting expedition, fighting to survive takes on a whole new meaning.

Recently, she was kind enough to take the time to answer a few questions I had for her:

1) Where did the inspiration for The Glass Arrow come from?

The idea for THE GLASS ARROW came from a story I’d seen in the news several years ago about decreasing numbers of women in rural China. The story talked about people seeking out girls in the community to bring them to areas that had smaller numbers. That’s where the idea for the hunting expedition that finds Aya was born.

2) Will this be a series or will it be a standalone?

A standalone! As much as I love writing series, this story is complete in one book.
3) If this were every made into a show or movie, what kind of soundtrack would you imagine it having?

I have a soundtrack! You can find it here: http://www.kristensimmonsbooks.com/books/the-glass-arrow/
I’m not much of a listener to music whilst writing, but I’m often inspired to write scenes after listening to a particular song. These were some that helped get the juices flowing.
4) What is the meaning of The Glass Arrow?

Hmmmm…you might just have to read the book to find out! Haha! Here’s a hint: there’s a story Aya’s told as a child that involves a glass arrow, and it’s meaning is revealed throughout the book.
5) Does your background in social work help influence character development in your stories?

Always. Social work taught me many things, but most of all our capacity for resilience. I have seen people at their lowest, who have clawed out of the deepest holes and come out victorious. It’s awe-inspiring. I want to write characters who face adversity and rise to the occasion.

It was a pleasure to meet her. As you can see, she draws much inspiration from the world around her—a mark of a truly great writer. You can find all her books at any major bookseller. I highly recommend them!

  • Very good review! The Glass Arrow sounds really interesting. Also, after reading this, I decided to pick up Article 5 and, so far, it’s been a great read. She seems like a really good writer. Now, I can’t wait to read this series AND read The Glass Arrow!
